This work raises theoretical-conceptual elements derived from the analysis of digital activism in Mexico. Based on the experience and knowledge acquired in qualitative research on Internet activism, elements are proposed to enrich the discussion on the scope and limitations of the appropriation of technology by contemporary social movements. It is highlighted that the Internet transcends its instrumental function to configure itself as a potential space of counterpower that social movements take advantage of to define and deploy their repertoires of connective action. Thus, it is proposed to think of the Internet as the rhizosphere where social movements use the techno-operational resources at their disposal to realize their demands and strengthen their internal links. Thus, the notion of rhizosphere highlights the structural affinity of the digital space and the social movements that act as a network within the network.
